Many thanks to Makiko Tada who created the way in which the following braids are made on her disk and plate and who has given us permission to put them up here for your instruction and enjoyment. Many more beautiful braids and ingenious designs may be found in her book Comprehensive Treatise for Disk and Plate.

KUMIHIMO PLATE INSTRUCTIONS

From the author:

I was born and educated in England. I came to the States with my American husband and managed to have four wonderful children. Always interested in fibre work I learned to weave in the late 1970's and about 10 years later I discovered kumihimo.  I was pretty much self-taught on the marudai but in 1998 I was introduced to my very first takadai in the studio of Makiko Tada. It was love at first  sight and half an hour after getting my first warp onto it I was entering negotiations to buy one. It has been my passion ever since.

Tada-Sensei has written half a dozen brilliant books covering the marudai, takadai and the recent disk and plate. She has also researched and written a book about Andean braids and how they may be constructed. Those of us who enjoy playing with this equipment owe her an enormous debt of gratitude for the continued work she is doing in spreading the art of Kumihimo and the enormously popular and delightful workshops that she gives all over the world.  I am indeed fortunate that she is my teacher and inspiration,

None Redmond
